Jul. 24--After 3 1/2 years of planning and delays, a development trio is ready to begin work on Shadyside's first major hotel.
The $17 million, 132-room Courtyard by Marriott is the work of Don Allen Chevrolet owner Richard Voelker, Cleveland-based Concord Hospitality and Sewickley developer Keith McGraw. Their preferred site is a 2-acre Shadyside car lot, sandwiched between Centre Avenue, Baum Boulevard and Liberty Avenue -- one of the busiest intersections in the city.
The hotel, once built, would be across the street from UPMC Shadyside Hospital and half a block from the $104 million Hillman Cancer Center, which is still under construction.
"There is a lot going on," said Voelker, who co-owns Don Allen Chevrolet at Baum and Liberty and currently uses the proposed hotel site as a place to store automobiles.
