Vashon Island, Wash., Ski and Snowboard Factory Workers Lose Jobs to China.

Jul. 20--For years, K2 was the one, from Vashon Island to Sarajevo.

It was on Vashon the skis were made that helped revolutionize the industry.

And the K2 ski and snowboard factory has been a major employer on the island, population 10,123. But in 1999, the company, now based in Los Angeles, sent about 200 production jobs overseas.

This week, 190 more workers in the Vashon manufacturing plant learned their jobs would be eliminated by Sept. 20 and sent to China to cut costs.

The news hit the workers and the island community hard.
