Aug. 1--Japanese goldfish are a rich man's luxury -- and with prices as high as 200,000 baht for a single fish, the hobby could even be considered eccentric in the extreme.
The 20-million-baht Thai Suwan Inter Farm at Praditmanootham Road in Bangkok is raising tens of thousands of imported goldfish priced from 1,000 baht to 200,000 baht.
Narat Sukthinthai, 28, founder and managing director of the farm said he sold up to 1,500 goldfish a month.
"Revenue from selling goldfish alone is four million baht a month and goldfish priced between 1,000 and 10,000 baht are the best sellers," he said. "The exaggerated goldfish species `Ranchu' and `Tosakin', which are priced as high as 200,000 baht, have gained popularity mainly as a rich man's hobby."He claims that the farm draws at least 100 visitors a day to admire the fish that are coloured in mixed hues of red, white, orange, silver and gold.
Forty display ponds that measure three metres by two metres each contain 30 to 100 goldfish. Another 30 ponds are used to keep stocks.
After two years' experience at Bangkok Farm, the country's largest fancy carp dealer, Mr Narat said he decided to open Thai Suwan Inter Farm two years ago.
