Aug. 1--A programme to promote Thailand as the "kitchen of the world" within 10 years is part of a preliminary master plan to develop the local food industry.

"Given a variety of backward linkage, minimal import content and high competitive advantage, the Thai food industry is regarded as a national strategic industrial sector," said Dr Sompob Manarangsun of Chulalongkorn University, a member of the drafting team.

However, despite the food industry's crucial role in the economy, there was no vision from the government or national agenda to help food producers increase efficiency and competitiveness, he said.

The comments came at a meeting yesterday of 50 local food manufacturers' groups that gathered to discuss the master plan.
