Jul. 28--The United States' unwillingness to compromise is jeopardising plans for a new global trade round widely expected to be launched by members of the World Trade Organisation later this year, a senior Commerce Ministry official said yesterday.
Its rigid position and other demands from rich and poor nations virtually eliminates any chance of all 141 WTO members showing their readiness by the end of this month to fully support a new round.
Paungrat Asawaphisith, deputy director-general of the business economics department, said the US was still paying lip service in support of a new round because it had not yet shown any sign of compromise with other members.
She cited Washington's refusal to change its position on anti-dumping duties demanded by Thailand and other developing countries as an example.
While praising members of the European Union for showing flexibility toward calls from developing countries to seriously consider the implementation of existing agreements, she saw no such position from US trade negotiators.
