Jul. 28--A new planning and zoning structure will force all new construction on Ko Samui to comply with one of five designs, according to Pongpol Adireksarn, a deputy prime minister.
He said a team of private architects would be hired to help draft the five design styles, covering residential and commercial buildings.
"We will look to focus on a tropical style, like the airport," Mr Pongpol said, gesturing around Samui Airport, owned and operated by Bangkok Airways.
Cabinet ministers met over the weekend at Ko Samui to drum up ways to boost tourism and revenue at the southern island resort.
Interior Minister Purachai Piumsombun said new entertainment venues would be restricted to Chaweng and Lamai beaches under a new zoning policy. He pointed to world-famous resorts such as Bali in Indonesia and the Seychelles in the Indian Ocean as islands which had successfully developed a uniform style and architecture for their tourist landscape.
"Local administrators in Ko Samui will oversee and control the construction of new buildings and city planning. For instance, buildings should not be higher than the coconut trees, to help in building a tropical atmosphere," Mr Purachai said.
