Seven `Wise Persons' to Draw Up Fresh Economic Agenda for Asia.

Jul. 28--Seven "wise persons" including former Thai deputy prime minister Supachai Panitchpakdi have been assigned to draft a "new agenda" for Asia, but the impact on decision-making of local governments and the private sector could be limited.
"I frankly do not know what the perception will be. We should not dream of any magic," said Noritada Morita, the chairman and chief executive of the Asia Strategy Forum (ASF).
Dr Kim Hak-Su, executive secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, said that the impact could be limited but the group was crucial to promoting open regional co-operation as Asia lagged behind other regions.
The seven will meet on Wednesday and Thursday at the United Nations Conference Centre in Bangkok at a forum titled "The Emerging Economic Map of Asia". The forum will focus on regional production restructuring, Asian integration and sustainable development. About 130 leaders and representatives of the private, public and government sectors will take part.
George Abonyi, executive director of the ASF, said there had been good progress in involving the productive sector in regional co-operation aside from formal inter-government deals.
Regional integration in the vehicle, apparel and information technology industries was leading the way to build Asia's competitiveness, he said.
