Jul. 27--The leading market share of top Hollywood film distributor Columbia Tristar Buena Vista Films (Thailand) Co. has been shaken by the euphoria surrounding the local release of the historical epic Suriyothai.
Despite a highly successful first half with the World War II epic Pearl Harbour (released on June 22), which is expected to count more than 110 million baht in ticket sales, bringing the distributor's first-half ticket receipts to 315 million baht, the firm is sweating because of the hype surrounding Suriyothai.
"We maintain a leadership position with around 35 percent to 40 percent market share over the past five years, but the last two years have been tough and the second half of 2001 will be the peak of competition," said Jame Dhiraputra, the company's country manager.
The increased competition comes from the higher quality of Thai films and increased efforts by other Hollywood distributors.
Suriyothai is scheduled to release on Aug 17, in expectation of 300 million baht in ticket sales in Bangkok alone.
