Jul. 27--Transport and Communications Minister Wan Muhamad Nor Matha said he would appoint a committee to investigate the controversial CDMA deal if the Communications Authority of Thailand defies his order to clarify it.
He also advised that the CAT board consider the qualifications of the would-be contractor, SBP Holding, instead of just looking into the low price it had offered.
SBP Holding, owned by Thien Pativejawong, was awarded a 15-year contract worth 29.9 billion baht to construct the CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) mobile network in the provinces, to be leased to the CAT.
But the transparency of the deal was questioned because the owner and major shareholders of SBP Holding are the same group of executives who unsuccessfully ran Tawan Mobile Telecom, the marketing arm of the CDMA mobile service.
The group later sold the firm to Hong Kong-based Hutchison.
