Jul. 27--SAN JOSE, Calif.--JDS Uniphase said Thursday that it lost $51 billion in the 12 months that ended June 30 -- the worst full-year loss in U.S. history -- including a huge write-off related to past acquisitions and the dramatic decline in its stock price.
The San Jose company, the world's largest maker of parts for fiber-optic communications networks, also doubled the number of jobs it plans to cut this year to 16,000. Before the layoffs began, the company employed 28,000.
JDS had warned last month that more layoffs were likely and has already completed more than half the cuts, including at least 900 in Silicon Valley. …
