Aug. 8--They're about the size of a laptop computer and not much more expensive than one.

But the American Red Cross of Northeastern New York says the automated external defibrillators can save victims of sudden cardiac arrest, and it is pushing for Capital Region businesses to stock them next to the first-aid kits and fire extinguishers.

"(Cardiopulmonary resuscitation) alone does not work," said Dr. Peter Sosnow, speaking Tuesday morning to a group of about 25 human resources managers and business officials at the Red Cross' regional headquarters on Everett Road.
