Aug. 3--Retailing giant Tesco Lotus has proposed that its superstores could become distribution centres for products of the government's One Tambon, One Product project to promote rural development.
At the same time, however, it has been hesitant to make a firmer commitment to use more local sub-contractors for its branch expansion.
Executives yesterday met with Industry Minister Suriya Juengrungruangkij, who called for collaboration by the company to support more local suppliers, especially small businesses.
Mr Suriya said the company agreed to allocate space in its branches to display products of the One Tambon, One Product project, starting in Udon Thani at the end of this month. The next branch to join the programme will be in Hat Yai.
In addition, Tesco Lotus also agreed to distribute local community and small-business products whose quality meets international standards through its six distribution centres worldwide.
Mr Suriya said the targeted products were mainly in the areas of processed foods, garments, electrical and consumer products.
