Aug. 3--The Thai Bankers' Association says that no members have automated teller machines or credit card approval terminals near or inside casinos located outside Thai territory along the Laotian and Cambodian borders.
Pol Lt-Gen Vasana Permlarb, head of the Money Laundering Commission, told the House of Representatives on Wednesday that Thai banks had in the past operated ATMs in border casinos.
He said that the case had already been cleared, and that there were no reports of any banks operating machines currently.
A Bank of Thailand official said one Thai bank earlier this year closed an ATM in a hotel near a casino. ATMs operated by Thai banks are along the border, but still within Thailand.
"I think the bank did not intend to open an ATM to facilitate casino gambling, but rather opened it in a place where there are casinos nearby," the central bank official said.
