Jul. 30--The Bank of Thailand will issue new 500-baht banknotes on Wednesday. They will gradually replace the existing 500-baht notes, which increasingly have been the target of forgery gangs.
However, the genuine notes that have been in use since 1996 will continue as legal tender.
Improved technology makes the new purple notes with intaglio more difficult to forge. Among the security features is a silver hologram foil stripe with the royal initials Phor Por Ror and the number 500 in Thai. They can be observed in different reflecting colours and in various dimensions when examined from different angles.
OPEN-ENDED FUND READY FOR SET DEBUT: Thailand's first listed open-ended fund will begin trading on Tuesday on the Stock Exchange of Thailand. The SCB SET Index Fund Management Project (SCBSET) has 500 million units with a par value of 10 baht each.
Vicharat Vichit-Vadakan, the SET president, said the listing of the exchange-traded fund would increase convenience for investors. Open-ended funds are normally traded through asset management companies and other dealers. All SET-listed funds are currently closed-ended.
SCBSET has a policy of investing at least 65 percent of net asset value in capital instruments. It is designed to move in line with the SET index, with a portfolio held in up to 120 securities representing a large component of the SET index.
24 PERCENT OF URBAN HOMES HAVE PCs: Twenty-four percent of urban homes in Bangkok have a personal computer and 20 percent of individuals have used the Internet in the last six months, according to a recent survey by ACNielsen Thailand, a market-research firm.
