Aug. 19--The world's fastest-growing, newest encyclopedia has little in common with its leather-bound ancestors. For starters, it's free and has never been printed on paper.
But there is little doubt that the Wikipedia, an online collaborative work being compiled by thousands of volunteers worldwide, has blossomed from an experimental dalliance into a full-blown competitor to commercial works such as Encyclopedia Britannica and Encarta.
"To some extent, that was the plan all along," says Wikipedia.org co-founder Jimmy Wales. "But, yeah, it still surprises me the way things are turning out."
In July, Wikipedia.org passed the 300,000-article milestone after three years in existence. Citations of its articles are growing within academia and the traditional news media.
