DALLAS _ Players around the league were stunned when Pro Bowl running backs Barry Sanders and Robert Smith walked away from the NFL at the top of their games.
Sanders was 30 and coming off a 1,491-yard rushing season for the Detroit Lions when he called it quits in the summer of 1999. Smith was 28 and coming off a 1,521-yard season and his first NFC rushing title for the Minnesota Vikings when he called it quits last winter.
