LIVERMORE, Calif. _ A White giant with a speed and power unrivaled on Earth has emerged from Lawrence Livermore Laboratory.

On Wednesday, the lab unveiled Goliath _ the towering ASCI White, the world's most powerful supercomputer.

The brain of this giant is more than 8,000 desktop computers in innocuous gray and black boxes spread over an overcooled area the size of two basketball courts. Its circulatory system is an engineering marvel of high-speed switches that let these individual computers work as one.

The creators, a mix of industry and weapons scientists fueled by federal money, need this wonder running at 12 trillion operations per second to solve serious national security and science problems …
