Sep. 7--The Communications Authority of Thailand will call new bids for its CDMA mobile phone expansion project in the provinces next month but with a smaller network size.
"The exact size of the CDMA network is being discussed but there is a great possibility that it will not need such a huge investment as proposed earlier by SBP Holding, because now we have some CDMA networks in the provinces. The expansion will only add to the existing networks," said Prachin Kechoranand, the CAT senior executive vice-president.
The CAT had selected SBP Holding, the sole bidder, earlier this year for the project when it proposed to construct the CDMA network in the provinces and lease it to the state agency for 15 years at a total cost of 29.9 billion baht.
But SBP withdrew after the transparency of the bidding and the viability of CDMA (code division multiple access) technology were questioned.
Mr Prachin said the CAT had concluded that it would go ahead with the expansion project by calling new bids.
