Sep. 7--Washing machines, common home appliances, are fast becoming tools of the trade for many enterprising businesses.
Stores with self-service coin-operated washing machines are mushrooming in residential areas in Bangkok, particularly around dormitories, apartments and condominiums. People living in these places are mostly students or workers who have little time to wash their clothes.
The laundromats are unlike overseas counterparts as most machines are ordinary models designed for home use -- not those specially produced for this type of business.
Those who chose the most appropriate size for their machines would be the most successful, said one operator.
"I think the best size for a washing machine is one that can handle five to 10 kilogrammes of clothes per load as this will help customers save time," said Supawadee Kanchanapongsak, the owner of the newly-opened Pa Sa-ad Store on Soi Phahon Yothin 24.
Depending on model specifications, prices of machines range from 10,000 to 50,000 baht, with a coin-operated meter controlling the washing time and an on/off switch costing an additional 5,000 to 6,000 baht.
