Sep. 7--An independent National Competition Policy Board is needed in order to provide the utmost benefit to consumers, according to Kiat Sittheeamorn, deputy secretary-general of the Board of Trade of Thailand.
Mr Kiat made the comment at a seminar in which several participants said that the existing Trade Competition Board, an arm of the Commerce Ministry, was prone to political interference.
Members of the board envisioned by Mr Kiat would have to declare their assets before and after taking office to show transparency.
"This would be a powerful board that could decide the fate of business operators. If it exercises power inappropriately, the law would be worth nothing to consumers," he said.
Mr Kiat suggested that the Trade Competition Law should also cover state enterprises once they are privatised. If they were exempt from the law, unfair competition could result in cases involving government concessions, he said.
