So, what's next?
This morning, General Electric Co. gets its first new boss since 1981 when Jeffrey Immelt replaces John F. "Jack" Welch Jr. at a board meeting. Immelt and others at the conglomerate say the transition -- perhaps the most-watched in corporate history -- already is complete. "On most major issues, he's been in charge of the company for the last six or eight months," GE spokesman Gary Sheffer said of Immelt on Thursday.
To outsiders, though, Immelt's first steps without Welch are eagerly anticipated.
They're unlikely to be earth-shattering. Immelt has said he wants to beef up the scope of Welch's major initiatives -- Six Sigma quality-control, digitization, globalization and services -- rather than introduce new ones. But one big winner might wind up being GE's Corporate Research & Development Center in Niskayuna, which Immelt has identified by name as key to his growth efforts.
