Dell Executive Plans to Step Down, Take Advisory Role.

Aug. 31--Dell Computer Corp. announced a major executive change Thursday afternoon, saying James Vanderslice would relinquish his titles of co-president and co-chief operating officer and become an executive adviser until his retirement at the end of next year.

Kevin Rollins, who held the titles with Vanderslice, becomes sole president and chief operating officer.

The company said Thursday that Vanderslice's retirement is simply part of an orderly transition of executive management. Vanderslice will not be replaced.

It marks the first time since 1997 that Dell will not have three members in the office of the chief executive.

Spokesman Mike Maher said Vanderslice's retirement is consistent with his plans when he joined the company. …
