Sep. 2--Recycling plants will be added to the list of businesses eligible for Board of Investment promotional privileges.

No restriction applied to the location of the operations as they would improve the environment, said Chutaporn Lambasara, the BoI's deputy secretary-general.

The inclusion of the new category is expected to be a formality when the board meets next month.

She said that investors had shown much interest in recycling, especially of electronic goods and automobiles, as certain parts could be re-used. The BoI's involvement would help ensure that correct recycling methods were used, she said.

Some companies have been showing concern about the environment. For example, Nokia recently launched its "Take Back" campaign to encourage its customers to leave unwanted handsets and accessories at its service outlets for later shipment to Singapore where the materials are recycled.
