Aug. 15--Forget the pizzazz of the Olympic opening ceremony and the gloss of the TV coverage; what's being presented from Athens on television screens around the world as the peak of sporting endeavour is nothing of the sort.
The moral code of the Olympic Games is under its most serious threat ever from the scourge of modern, performance-enhancing drugs. Some of the best-known gold medallists from the last games are under suspension or suspicion. Many of the favourites for the Athens games have been banned from competing. Seventeen top US athletes have tested positive since October last year.
It's hardly conceivable that top international sprinters would admit publicly that the blue-ribbon track event, the men's 100 metres, will not be "clean." If that is the case, what possible hope is there for the future of an event where even the host nation has been forced to bar two of its star athletes on the eve of the opening of the games because they wouldn't or couldn't face a drugs test?
