2004 Mercury Mountaineer Premier
Date in fleet: July 7-21 As-tested price: $41,155 Powertrain: 4.6-liter V8; awd, five-speed automatic Output: 239 hp @ 4000 rpm, 282 lb-ft @ 4000 rpm Curb weight: 4523 pounds
GRITZINGER: Mercury's Mountaineer provides a good balance in the midsize SUV crop: three rows of seats in a tight and trim package; nice, but not over-the-top appointments inside and out; a solid engine and awd. Yes, you can get an Explorer for less money, but to get this level of style and equipment you'll pay Eddie Bauer money. Yes, you could get a bigger Expedition for this money, but do you really need that size and a 5.4-liter engine? Yes, a GMC Envoy XL would put you in the same ballpark, but you'd be stuck with that add-on XL appearance. The Mountaineer does a great job of hitting the sweet spot when combining badge cachet, affordable comfort and SUV practicality in one package.
Complaints? Even with adjustable pedals I can't find the right seating position that isn't too close for comfort or just so far away that my foot keeps slipping off the throttle.
2004 GMC Yukon XL 2500
Date in fleet: July 14-21 As-tested price: $51,910 Powertrain: 6.0-liter V8; 4wd, four-speed automatic Output: 325 hp @ 5200 rpm, 365 lb-ft @ 4000 rpm Curb weight: 6113 pounds
HART: I spent about a week in the Yukon and it wore on me. This is a big truck; I couldn't imagine using it as a daily driver, though I know there are tens of thousands of people who do. I believed the ride would be harsher, and while it's still truck-like, the pavement has to be torn up and pocked before you start bouncing to the point of discomfort.
