Byline: MARK VAUGHN
On the day we visited the place that builds his cars, the big man was not in.
Those in his inner circle, not his innermost inner circle but the one close enough to build his cars, call Shaquille O'Neal simply, "Big.'' Big is short for his full nickname, "Big Diesel.'' On the day we visited, Albert Pineda, the man who owns the shop that builds the cars, pulled out his multifunctional mobile phone and hit a pre-programmed number. It was Shaq's personal assistant.
"Hey, Big left already to France, right?'' Pineda asked.
Yes, Big was in France, on vacation after losing the NBA Finals to Detroit. Word is when he answers his cellphone while over there he says, "Bonjour'' instead of "Hello.'' But then, Big can say whatever he wants.
Big can also have any car he wants, and he has wanted a lot of them: older classics like a '64 Continental convertible, '69 Galaxy, two '64 Impalas; and plenty of new SUVs, BMWs and Mercedes. One day Big decided he wanted a new Rolls-Royce Phantom and sent Pineda and a shop mate to get one. That was when Da Shop was still in Huntington Beach. So Pineda went to a Rolls dealer in Newport.
"We were all dirty an' everything from working,'' he said. "They didn't believe us.''
