Oct. 4--World Thai Star TV Co says it will challenge a government decision prohibiting it from carrying commercials and broadcasting its programmes nationwide.
An investigative committee had concluded that the company's concession to operate pay-television meant commercials were forbidden, said Somsak Thepsuthin, the Prime Minister's Office minister who ordered the investigation.
The Public Relations Department (PRD), which granted the concession, also said that broadcasting outside of Greater Bangkok violated its terms.
The company maintained that it had legitimate rights to run commercials and broadcast nationwide.
World Thai Star TV Co announced its plan two months ago to offer a new free-to-air TV station with several channels. It planned to broadcast nationwide to viewers who installed special antennas. As well, it said it would sell commercials.
The original broadcasting concession for pay-TV was granted in 1996 to Thai Star TV Co, one of two bidders. The concession holder later reported that it had been renamed, though Commercial Registration Department records showed that Thai Star and World Thai Star were different entities.
However, the investigative committee concluded that there was nothing wrong with the name change and that the concession granting process had been transparent, Mr Somsak said.
