Oct. 2--Due to tougher competition and economic uncertainties, Tawan Mobile Telecom has decided to skip 2G technology and incorporate the more advanced 2.5G version in its mobile phone service.
As a result, its official launch will be delayed to April 2002 from around the end of this year. Tawan had earlier planned to provide 2G or second-generation voice communication in the first stage and move on to 2.5G data communications shortly afterward.
"But in the area of voice communications, we can't compete with existing operators, given our limited coverage," said an executive source.
The two dominant GSM operators plan to provide 2.5G service using General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) this month.
CP Orange Co, a CP Group mobile start-up, also plans to launch 2.5G service by the end of this year.
Tawan's move is in line with the strategy of its Hong Kong parent, Hutchison Whampoa, to move its cellular units to third-generation or 3G, touted to become the mainstream technology in the near future.
