Oct. 6--To the delight of many travelers Friday, National Guard troops carrying M-16 rifles began patrolling security checkpoints leading to airplanes at San Francisco and Los Angeles international airports.

"Today is different. I've flown from four airports since the attack, and this is the tightest security I've seen," said Robert Maniaci of Tracy, who said he flies 60,000 miles a year for business. "I'm happy they're here."

Eighty-six National Guard members and their support staff reported to San Francisco International Airport on Friday, said Gov. Gray Davis, who flew to Los Angeles and San Francisco to inspect the first …
