Oct. 5--After several years of no growth in traffic, Bangkok Port is considering switching its emphasis from the port business to integrated transport services to improve revenue.
The port has suffered since 1996 from a cap on cargo handling at one million containers (20-foot equivalent) per year. The limit was imposed in an attempt to ease congestion in Bangkok and encourage more use of facilities at Laem Chabang in Chon Buri.
"We are seeking measures to help boost the port's revenue and efficiency in order to sustain our business and survive in today's business conditions," said a Bangkok Port executive who asked not to be identified.
The executive said options under study included expanding logistics services and offering packing services and other activities including inventory management, bonded warehouses as well as duty-free shops.
The Port Authority of Thailand board is scheduled to discuss the proposals on Oct 19, with a working committee expected to be set up shortly afterward.
"We have to study the feasibility of diversifying our warehouses into logistics centres and offering other related port services," the executive said. "Obstacles to port diversification, such as human resources, marketing networks and business management skills, will also be addressed."
