Oct. 5--Producers of canned food want to sell their products directly to relief organisations under the United Nations and have asked the government to negotiate on their behalf.
Permphan Neowakul, the president of Albatross Co, Thailand's biggest producer of canned rice, said the UN was a large buyer of food, especially ready-to-eat items.
Thai products now supplied to the UN are bought and distributed by brokers in Singapore.
"In my view, the UN normally does not buy food from small manufacturers but has big firms in Singapore gather and distribute the products. It would be better if we could expand our market by selling directly to the UN," he said.
An official at the Export Promotion Department said the commercial affairs office in New York had invited buyers from the UN to visit Thai factories and exporters.
However, he said that many Thai food producers were not interested in supplying the UN as they thought the price would be low.
