Oct. 5--REMEMBER NOT TO FORGET: A brief news item caught our eye the other day, concerning the sudden revival of interest in the king of Afghanistan. Lobbying to raise exiled monarch's profile and secure his support has been stepped up in Washington.
Among those acting on behalf of Muhammad Zahir Shah is Robert "Bud" McFarlane, a former national security adviser to Ronald Reagan.
The name rang a bell, but time had obliterated most of our other recollections about what Mr McFarlane was up to 20 years ago. We recalled vaguely that he had played a role in the Iran-Contra affair. The televised inquiry into its outcome had provided us with hours of entertainment at the time.
What did Bud McFarlane not know and when did he not know it? How many times, we wondered, had he said, "Senator, I have no recollection"?
This was a job for the memory-jogging power of the Internet. Enter "Bud McFarlane" into a search engine (we like Google) and sooner or later you will be taken to a wonderful resource, Iran-Contra Trading Cards, with capsule biographies of all your favourites from that fondly recalled era.
Amazing how much we've forgotten, isn't it?
Not that Iran-Contra can be compared with recent events, but keep this in mind: as America goes about forming a new -- and possibly very weird -- coalition to prosecute a just cause, who is being promised what?
