Plan for Ikea Store in East Palo Alto, Calif., Dies after Council Deadlocks.

Oct. 17--After months of debate, the proposal to bring an Ikea store to East Palo Alto was effectively killed Tuesday night after the city council could not get three votes to move the project forward.

The council deadlocked on a planning commission appeal that had been filed by opponents of the project. That impasse means the plans for the giant furniture store grind to a halt.

"The current project is dead," city attorney Michael Lawson said after the vote.

The deadlock arose over an earlier decision by the city commission. Last month, the planning commission voted 5-2 to move the project along to the city council. …
