Oct. 22--American soldiers don't fly, march or sail without taking part of the Capital Region with them.

Workers here aren't building the planes or sewing the uniforms. But they're building parts of those things.

Sheepskin Lining Co. of Gloversville puts headbands in nine out of 10 Army helmets. Ceramaseal of New Lebanon makes seals used in a defense system installed on Navy ships. Breton Industries Inc. of Amsterdam makes fabric items used to protect tanks.

New York state companies, in fact, did $5.6 billion worth of defense work last year.
