Struggling Paseo del Monte could lose its charter after poor student test scores and other problems.

Just opening the doors feels like a noble act of defiance for the small staff of Paseo del Monte Middle School.

The 94-student charter school starting its second year is fighting more than just bleary-eyed students and school supply shortages as it opens this morning along with most Albuquerque Public Schools.

With the Board of Education threatening to remove its charter, the school is fighting for its right to exist, said Cecilia Romero Tkach, its English as a Second Language community liaison.
