"It's what you do after you fail that makes you fearless."

Lisa Scottoline's first career was working as a trial lawyer in Philadelphia, but she secretly dreamed of writing legal thrillers instead of legal briefs. After five years in that field, she finally worked up the courage to kiss the courtroom goodbye and began living off her credit card. Her goal was to land a book deal before she reached a balance of $50,000. Thankfully, her gamble paid off in a big way. Today, more than five million copies of her books (such as Dead Ringer, Rough Justice, and Courting Trouble) have sold worldwide, and the last five have been New York Times best sellers. And that credit-card debt? It's long gone.
