Nov. 6--Kayaking will eventually be as popular as mountain-biking in Thailand if the growing number of enthusiasts have their way.

With this in mind, a Thai-New Zealand joint venture, Joy Sports Co, is pioneering local production of kayaks under the FeelFree brand, licensed from the New Zealand partner, Feel-Free International Co.

Local interest in kayaking has grown over the past two years as Thais have seen tourists using the boats to tour beaches, rivers and islands. The boats are like those originally used by Eskimos and are slimmer and lighter than conventional canoes.

Established last year with one million baht registered capital, the company can make about 300 kayaks a month to supply both the domestic and export markets, according to Sakun Khieowan, the company's director.

Mr Sakun, 31, spent almost three years researching the Asian market where he wants to compete against dominant products from America, Europe and New Zealand.

"It may be a dream but I want to be number one in Asia," he said.

He entered the kayak business by chance when his Australian partner in the production of auto accessories introduced him to his New Zealand friend who is a prominent maker of kayak moulds.
