Nov. 5--Its closest relative is the garden snail but there similarities end. Coming from icy ocean waters, the abalone has made its name in Asia as the king of seafood.
Abalone is available only in certain parts of the globe. Australia is the largest exporter with a 40 percent market share, while the state of Tasmania accounts for a quarter of the country's shipments, according to the Tasmanian Abalone Council.
Now Abalone Direct Co, a new seafood import company, is determined to put fresh, wild abalone on Thai dining tables where canned abalone now reign supreme.
The Tasmanian company is the only importer of live abalone to Thailand, and it is doing away with the middlemen by linking the producer directly with the buyer.
"Our philosophy is: from the producer to the end user," said Dean Quinn, sales and marketing director of Abalone Direct's mother company, Pac8, based in Tasmania.
Peter Swain, Abalone Direct's distributor, marketer and chief executive, can attest to the fact as he dives into the crisp Tasmanian waters to collect the abalone that is shipped to Thailand.
