Nov. 5--A venture to make handicrafts more appealing to the export market has proved successful, largely because of the efforts of one creative designer.
Despite the confusion among several state agencies over who is responsible for different aspects of the One Tambon, One Project programme, Narongsak Satitanon carved through the red tape to help the Export Promotion Department plan handicraft development and production.
Crafts made under the project had top billing at the department's display at the Bangkok International Gift and Houseware Fair recently.
Assorted natural fibres and fabrics from various provinces are used for making products including pillows, cushions, lamps, furniture, vases and bags.
Mr Narongsak, 32, has given Thai handicrafts a new look, making them more attractive to foreign visitors at the fair. Negotiations are under way to export some products.
He represents villager groups in the provinces in negotiations with exporters, but says this aspect of his work will finish soon when the department selects reliable, fair traders to handle the exported products.
