Nov. 5--Confusion among state agencies promoting the One Tambon, One Product programme has led the government to merge 16 different agencies into a central organisation.

The programme, a centrepiece of the community development strategy, has made slow progress, in part due to uncertainties and conflicts between the co-ordinating agencies.

In September, the government said a national board would be established under Pongpol Adireksarn, a deputy prime minister, to oversee the scheme.

The board, due to hold its second meeting today, is expected to announce the formation of a new office under the PM's Office to directly oversee implementation of the programme.

New selection criteria for the programme are also expected to reduce overlap among the hundreds of communities seeking to participate, as well as focus on goods unique to each area.

Agencies now involved with the programme include departments of the interior, agriculture, commerce, industry and science ministries.

However, rather than centralising marketing and promotion, for instance, each department has taken to running its own ads. Other problems have emerged in differing opinions on how best to market the products.
