Nov. 2--Land Rover plans to invest about 500 million baht over the next two years to assemble vehicles in Thailand for both the domestic and export markets.
The United Kingdom-based unit of Ford's Premier Automotive Group announced the plans yesterday while officially launching a new subsidiary, Land Rover Thailand Co.
The launch, attended by Richard Haigh, Land Rover Group's international market director, and Colin Andrews, Land Rover Thailand's managing director, will increase the group's production bases to eight countries.
Land Rover vehicles have been sold in Thailand on and off for four decades.
Thai Ultimate Car Co, a subsidiary of Thai Rung Union Car Co, represented the brand as importer and distributor for 10 years before Land Rover decided to establish its own subsidiary.
Mr Andrews said that although it might appear from the economic situation that Land Rover had chosen a bad time to come to Thailand, that was only a short-term view.
