Nov. 1--What's in junk?
Perhaps not much for most people, apart from grime. But a small Thai company striving to make something useful from it sees a bright and lucrative future hidden beneath the grime.
Many of the figurines made from used automobile parts sold in some tourist areas in Bangkok today are supplied by Thai Initiation Co Ltd, which has redefined its role from an online trader of Thai products to a maker of figurines fashioned from car parts.
While the concept of making things from junk is nothing new in Western countries, especially Germany, the idea is not very popular in Thailand.
Inspired by a collection of small musician figurines made from steel wire on a television programme, the company's founder created prototypes of figurines made from used automobile parts.
Thai Initiation was established in 1997 just after the recession started, with the aim of using electronic commerce to promote the uniqueness of Thai products, said Sivaporn Mongkolsithisil, the company's general manager.
