Nov. 9--Despite the uncertain outlook for tourism and conventions, the Bangkok International Trade and Exhibition Centre (Bitec) plans to spend three billion baht to double in size.
It recently opened a new multi-purpose hall covering 6,000 square metres to accommodate some show organisers' needs for larger exhibition spaces.
The 200-million-baht hall represented only the first phase of the expansion plan, said managing director Prasarn Bhiraj Buri.
So far, he said, prevailing world tensions had not affected the trade show and convention business significantly. In fact, customers such as Grand Prix International, the Export Promotion Department and Reed Tradex had recently asked to expand space for their planned trade shows in 2002.
"Whether there is a war or not, people still have to do business. We don't expect to see any drop in the trade-show segment," he said.
According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand, the Mice (meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions) business generated about 28 billion baht in each of the last three years.
