Nov. 8--The government has recruited 7,600 farmers for its drive to promote organic farming.
A total of 300 million baht will be sought from the government's 58-billion-baht emergency economic stimulus fund to make farmers and the public aware of the potential.
The money will also be used to prepare demonstration plots for farmers in 191 tambons in 66 provinces.
Forty farmers from each tambon will join the project, which is scheduled to start early next month, Vichien Petpisit, botany and weed science director of the Agriculture Department, told a seminar on organic farming.
The department's officials will survey farmers' needs and problems in switching from chemical cultivation to organic agriculture. The government will earmark 100 million baht to provide crop essentials for the farmers.
Once the farmers are recruited, officials will be sent to examine the soil quality to determine the harvest times of the crops.
