Nov. 8--The government yesterday unveiled programmes totalling 16.3 billion baht aimed at stimulating the property market and creating new jobs.
Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra said the programmes would boost Thailand's "economic engine" and lay the groundwork for future growth.
Further details of both the property stimulus plan and the jobs programme would be announced next month, he said, "as a New Year's present for the public".
The prime minister yesterday chaired a committee overseeing implementation of the two programmes.
Overall, 11.39 billion baht in funds will go to some 19 projects aimed at creating new jobs, increasing job skills, developing new businesses and boosting welfare benefits for the unemployed. The programmes are expected to help more than 900,000 people.
According to the National Statistical Office, unemployment now stands at around 1.3 million, representing 3.9 percent of the labour force.
