Texas Insurance Chief Says Mold Coverage Must Stay.

Nov. 29--Texas homeowners will be able to keep basic insurance coverage for mold but might have to foot the bill for costly testing and cleanup, Insurance Commissioner Jose Montemayor ruled Wednesday.

As have his previous decisions on mold coverage, Montemayor's latest ruling displeased insurance companies and consumer groups alike.

Critics accused Montemayor of shifting the burden of paying for mold cleanup to Texas families.

Insurance companies -- some of which wanted all mold coverage removed -- warned of higher premiums.

Montemayor defended his ruling as a "common-sense, middle-ground approach."
