Nov. 28--BALTIMORE -- A U.S. judge questioned on Tuesday whether Microsoft Corp.'s $1 billion plan to give computers to schools to settle consumer antitrust claims would give it an unfair advantage in one of the few markets where it faces substantial competition from Apple Computer Inc.
U.S. District Judge J. Frederick Motz asked lawyers for class-action plaintiffs who negotiated the settlement to respond to criticism from Apple, Red Hat and industry groups that allowing Microsoft to donate software and refurbished personal computers would entrench the company's Windows monopoly.
