FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. _ The federal government soon will determine which schools are the nation's best based largely on standardized test scores, the yardstick President Bush's education plan considers the best way to gauge school performance.
For nearly 20 years, the best U.S. schools have received the prestigious Blue Ribbon School of Excellence award. Judges considered students' performance on standardized tests, but also looked at services available to students, quality of staff, community and parental involvement and safety.
But U.S. Education Secretary Rod Paige has said there will be changes for next year's awards. While the new criteria aren't ready, it is clear test scores will play a much larger role.
