CHARLOTTE, N.C._When 9-year-old Kristen Hargis learned that a Charlotte food pantry was running low on supplies, she collected canned goods at school to restock its shelves.
On Election Day 2000, she campaigned with a banner that read, "Build Us a New School," encouraging voters to say yes to the district's $275.5 million bond package.
And on Sept. 12, she took a jar to school, put a red cross on it and suggested her classmates donate their ice cream money.
