Dec. 11--You can buy instant soups of many kinds, so why not tomyam koong, the traditional spicy prawn variety?
With that thought in mind, Siam Preserved Foods Co embarked on several years of trials before coming up with a product that creates the tastebud tickler a minute after adding hot water.
Consumers who have tried the soup say it's a worthy second to the real thing made from fresh ingredients including prawns.
Aware of this, the company has targetted the export market. Boonyakiet Netcharussaeng, the chairman, said instant Thai cuisine had good export potential, particularly in Asia, because of the convenience in serving.
Unlike making tomato soup, for example, producing instant tomyam koong was a demanding challenge, with at least 100 recipes tested before one was selected for the right mix of taste and appearance.
Apart from tomyam koong, the company also makes instant green chicken curry, spicy minced prawns and chicken, and prawns in curry sauce.
Although exports have been the main market, the company has been encouraged by the growing popularity of convenience foods in Thailand, spurred by busy lifestyles.
